He was one of the most prolific artists of the century and enjoyed the greatest success during the Second Empire, benefiting from the personal support of Napoleon III. His work was greatly influenced by the style of the Italian Renaissance and that of the 18th century, which he helped to bring up to date. From his workshop in Paris came a prodigious quantity of decorative statuettes. Carrier-Belleuse was, towards the end of his life, director of art works at the Manufacture de Sèvres. His passage was marked by the renewal of the collections and the modernization of the style. This bust is very nervous, especially in the hair. You will notice that it rests on a wooden shower base.
