Georges OUDOT (1928-2004) Born on July 28, 1928 in Chaumont in the Haute Marne and died on October 13, 2004 in Besançon in the Doubs, Georges Oudot is a French painter and sculptor. After studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Besançon, he entered the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in 1946 where he was a student of Marcel Gimond and Alfred Janniot. Then he returned to Besançon where he set up his studio. He is considered one of the most significant representatives of contemporary figurative sculpture. He is also the author of numerous engravings and lithographs and several medals. He produced numerous portraits including those of Pierre Mendès France, Edgard Faure (whose academician's sword he created), Juliette Gréco, Madame Pompidou, Léon Bourgeois and Princess Grâce of Monaco. His works are presented in about twenty museums including the Modern Art Museum of the city of Paris, Marseille, Strasbourg, Besançon, Belfort, etc. And all over the world: Lausanne, Vatican, Erlangen, Fribourg, Monaco, Skopje, Tehran, etc. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor, the National Order of Merit and the Order of Arts and Letters. Georges Oudot has received numerous awards: the Fénéon Prize for sculpture, the National Prize for Arts, the Young Sculpture Prize, the Modigliani Prize for drawing; the Biennale Prize for sculpture, and a tribute awarded by the Jury of the Critics' Prize for his entire body of work. Georges Oudot was Edgar Faure's cultural advisor when he was president of the Franche Comté Region. He participated in the creation of the CRDC, the Regional Center for Cultural Diffusion, of which he was president for a long time. He created the Besançon Biennial of Plastic Arts and set up the first FRAC management committee composed of artists and craftsmen. He left these functions abruptly without putting in place the foundations of a good policy for acquiring works.
