BRONZE BY HOUDON WITH BLACK PATINA MORDOREE XIXTH ANTIQUE WOMAN M1356This neoclassical bronze represents Diana the huntress resting on one foot. It measures a large size 64.5 cm. In Roman mythology, Diana is the goddess of the hunt and the night, similar to Artemis in Greek mythology. She is depicted wearing a tunic with a crescent moon on her head. Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828) is a French sculptor. He is one of the most important sculptors of the 18th century. Renowned for the realistic rendering of his works, skilled not only in marble work, Houdon also had talent and aptitude for shaping earth, plaster and bronze. He is often called "the sculptor of the Enlightenment". The patina is dark chocolate. The base is in red Languedoc marble. It is a key assembly hence the traces on the arms and under the buttocks. Note that the bow and arrow are missing. This bronze weighs 7.3 kg. We report for the most picky, keys on both arms and on one leg, jumps and égrenures on the base.
