Bookends in Spelter by Hippolyte Moreau 1930 Cats with snails M1393Here is a pair of exceptional bookends, placed on a supporting marble. They represent a cat playing with a snail. They are in regulation and bear the signature H. Moreau for Hippolyte Moreau. They are well made. Hippolyte (1832-1926), is a French sculptor. François dit Hippolyte is the second son of sculptor Jean-Baptiste-Louis-Joseph Moreau and trained in his father's studio. He mainly produced medium-sized works and decorative or everyday objects: vases, statuettes, letter openers, trinket trays in bronze, spelter or pewter. He is the author of the statue of Alexis Claude Clairaut (1880) on one of the facades of the Paris City Hall. Most of his works are kept at the Dijon Museum of Fine Arts. The quality is there with a nice original silver patina. For the state, note some wear and friction, one of the cats moves slightly and the base of the bases is a little damaged.
