Description

A breakfast, dessert or snack service accompanied by a small espresso coffee for 4 people from Arcopal dating from 1968, model “Avila” with a motif of flowers and hawthorn branches. Although the motif evokes an autumnal atmosphere with the hawthorn, this plant does not bloom in autumn, but rather from May to June. What seems autumnal in this decor is rather the red foliage, which actually appears in September, accompanied by berries.
*
This model is part of the first Arcopal decors. In the 60s, many models decorated the rooms with floral motifs. At the end of the 60s, two models bear the following names “Avila” and “Volubilis”. The first has a branch of hawthorn, while the second is decorated with bindweed. These names refer to the cities of Avila in Spain and Volubilis in Morocco. Despite my extensive research, it remains a mystery why these names were given to these floral patterns.
*
In 1960, during its first creations until 1968, Arcopal started with opal, a translucent tempered glass. It was not until 1970 that the glass evolved into milk glass, therefore not translucent.
*
The translucent models of the 60s represented a period of sobriety and discreet elegance, while from 1970, the design became more daring, colorful and dynamic.
*
As for the “Avila” model, which evokes the charming Spanish city known for its medieval wall, it has no connection with the hawthorn. Perhaps one day we will discover the reason for this choice of name, but for now, it remains a mystery.
*
In the meantime, this service will be perfect for an autumn table, accompanied by a piece of apple cake.
