Natural daughter of a great lord, she was raised by the Dominican nuns of Poissy. In 1613, married to a simple bourgeois, she became Mademoiselle Le Gras. Her son Michel will give her a lot of worries. At 34, she finds herself a widow. It was then that she met Saint Vincent de Paul. Captivated by the priest's contagious charity, she quickly became his collaborator in all his charitable actions. In 1633, together they founded the "Company of the Daughters of Charity", commonly called the Sisters of Saint Vincent de Paul. Louise, superior of the new community, directed the sisters towards all the excluded of her time: she created small schools for poor girls; she organized the reception and education of foundlings; she developed home visits for poor sick people; she sent sisters to galley slaves... A passion inhabited her: the love of man created in the image of God and redeemed by the blood of his only Son. Like Monsieur Vincent, she died at work. Her body rests in Paris at 140 rue du Bac. She was beatified in 1920, canonized by Pius XI in 1934; In 1960, John XXIII declared her patron saint of all Christian social workers. Saint Louise de Marillac was traditionally celebrated on March 15. Since this date fell during Lent, the 'Dicastery for the Causes of Saints' requested a change of date in the Vincentian liturgical calendar to allow for her celebration. She is now celebrated on May 9, the anniversary of her beatification in 1920.
