The Belgian Army was subdivided into six "army divisions" (the equivalent of infantry divisions in other armies), supplemented by a cavalry division. Each division consisted of three mixed brigades, a cavalry regiment, an artillery regiment and various transport units.
The nominal strength of a division varied from 25,500 to 32,000 men of all ranks, with a total strength of eighteen infantry battalions, a cavalry regiment, eighteen machine guns and forty-eight cannons.
Two divisions (the 2nd and 6th) each had an additional artillery detachment, for a total of sixty cannons.
The cavalry division had two brigades of two regiments each, three horse batteries, a battalion of cyclists, a company of cyclist pontoon pioneers and support units. Its total strength amounted to 2,500 sabres, 450 cyclists and twelve cannons.
