Historical context:
The Belgian National Gendarmerie was created by a government decree on November 19, 1830. It was an armed force responsible for policing and maintaining order among the civilian population, carrying out judicial duties at the request of the Public Prosecutor's Office, and as a Provost in the army. As such, it has long depended on the Ministers of the Interior, Justice and Defense depending on the task to be accomplished.

Three-branch handle, filigree still present with its scabbard but in superb condition of conservation, lion's head guard, original leather tie, no play.
