8 soup plates (diameter 23cm, height 3cm) with wader decoration, Martres-Tolosane earthenware factory, 20th century.
At the beginning of the 18th century, several earthenware factories settled in Martres-Tolosane. The first craftsmen came from large French earthenware centers; the earthenware activity developed considerably and around ten earthenware factories were listed in the city. The revolution and competition from industrial fine earthenware put a brake on this development. In 1790, there were only two earthenware factories left in Martres-Tolosane which allowed the know-how to be preserved.
Today, the same ancestral manufacturing techniques are preserved by the four earthenware factories: The pieces and the painted decorations are made by hand. The main motifs are made up of flowers and birds.
